Nationaltheater Mannheim

New Audiences

"ALPHABET" is the introductory program of Nationaltheater Mannheim for opera beginners to provide an easy access to opera with participatory projects. The activities comprise inviting the city of Mannheim to selected performances, the production of two chamber operas, a complementary concert programme and a choir for local residents. The "ALPHABET BLOG" provides an overview and up to date of all performances and projects, commentaries and visuals documenting our events.

Innovation & Creativity

Nationaltheater Mannheim realizes a new opera creation for its 18/19 season: "Dark Spring" – an opera in eleven scenes by Hans Thomalla. Based on Frank Wedekinds 1891 play "Spring Awakening" and inspired by Sofia Coppolas film "The Bling Ring" the opera will look at young adults as a “cool” generation in a cold society hiding vulnerabilities. It is a German-Swiss co-production, featuring an international cast.

Emerging Artists

In the season 2016/2017 Nationaltheater Mannheim founded the International Opera Studio as its new main program to support emerging artists on the beginning of their professional careers. The program consists of role studies, vocal lessons, acting and movement classes. Own productions are created as well as the young artists take on roles in the main opera productions. There they work with internationally renowned conductors and directors and experienced colleagues.
