About the Project

Arnold Schönberg's opera encounters video game mechanics: The player experiences a woman's desperate, fearful search for her lover from a first-person perspective. A 360° VR rendered world immerses you in a surreal, eerie forest nightscape and the protagonist's troubled inner life as she finds her partner - lifeless. Schönberg's impressive orchestral music in 3D ambisonics sound, the highly emotional expression of an opera singer and the opportunity to act at selected points in the plot transform this opera experience into an intense performance experience.

Arnold Schönbergs Oper stößt auf Game Mechanik: Der:Die Zuschauer:in erlebt aus der Egoperspektive die verzweifelt angsterfüllten Suche einer Frau nach ihrem Geliebten. In einer gerenderten 360°-VR-Welt taucht man ein in eine surreale, unheimliche nächtliche Waldszenerie und in das aufgewühlte Innenleben der Protagonistin, während diese ihren leblosen Partner findet. Schönbergs imposante Orchestermusik im 3D ambisonics-Klang, der hoch emotionale Gesang einer Opernsängerin und die Möglichkeit an ausgewählten Punkten der Handlung zu agieren, verwandeln dieses Opernerlebnis zu einer intensiven Spielerfahrung.

With great expression, Arnold Schönberg's music and Marie Pappenheim's text reflect the protagonist's state of mind through the dissolution of syntax and tonality. An orchestra of more than 85 musicians accompanies the multifaceted psychogram of a murderess in this rarely performed work. In Schönberg's expressive, expressionistic tonal language, both the gloomy, eerie forest scenery and the gripping psychological drama of a desperate, fearful, jealous woman can be experienced directly.

Mit großem expressivem Ausdruck spiegeln Arnold Schönbergs Musik und Marie Pappenheims Text den Seelenzustand der Protagonistin durch die Auflösung von Syntax und Tonalität wider. Ein über 85-köpfiges Orchester begleitet in diesem selten gespielten Werk facettenreich das Psychogramm einer Mörderin. In der ausdrucksvollen, expressionistischen Klangsprache Schönbergs wird sowohl die düstere, unheimliche Waldszenerie unmittelbar erfahrbar als auch das packende psychologische Drama einer verzweifelten, angsterfüllten, eifersüchtigen Frau.

Why should you support us?

To make the VR opera game more accessible to an international audience, we want to translate the libretto into many languages, so that users can activate subtitles while playing and thus come to a deeper understanding of the text. With 10,000 € the following languages would be selectable:

Um die VR-Opernerfahrung auch einem internationalen Publikum in vollem Umfang zugänglich zu machen, wollen wir Übersetzungen des deutschen Librettos anfertigen lassen. Mit einer Crowfunding Summe von 10.000 € wären Untertitel in folgenden Sprachen auswählbar:

Who are we?

The State Theater of Augsburg established a new artistic division in 2020 - the digital theater - and has also been working with the creative agency Heimspiel GmbH for several years. That means we are a close-knit team of professional theater makers and VR software specialists.

The following selected projects have already been realized with our team:

»Orfeo ed Euridice«: opera with 500 simultaneously controlled VR-headsets in a mixed-reality hybrid experience within the opera house
vr-theater@home: Twelve 360° video experiences, ranging from spoken word drama and ballet to classical concert. Delivered including VR-headset for the enjoyment at home
Elektrotheater: multiplayer VR stage framework, where live theater in realtime is made possible through the use of avatars

Das Staatstheater Augsburg gründete 2020 eine neue Sparte – das Digitaltheater - und arbeitet schon darüber hinaus seit einigen Jahren mit der Kreativagentur Heimspiel GmbH zusammen. Wir sind also ein gut zusammengewachsenes Team aus professionellen Theatermacher:innen und VR-Software-Spezialisten.

Media keep covering "Erwartung"

German media outlet "Bayerischer Rundfunk" visited us the other day to witness our orchestra perform "Erwartung" for the 3D audio recording. They write:

"For the ultra-real listening experience, the 3D sound of the VR game, the Augsburg Philharmonic Orchestra recorded the music at a concert hall in Augsburg. A square iron frame hovers above the orchestra, specially made with a 3D printer and equipped with numerous microphones. The orchestra itself is also teeming with microphones."

All this hard work of the audio department and the orchestra will integrate seamlessly into the VR game at the end. Read the whole article here:

"Erwartung" in German-French TV channel arte on Oct 30!

German-French TV channel "arte" visited us for one whole day to film our audio recordings of "Erwartung" and to talk about the future of opera, and how we use Virtual Reality and gameplay to draw viewers into the world of Arnold Schönberg.

The expectation for »Erwartung« is rising. Members of our patronage societies meet general music director Domonkos Héja and soprano Sally du Randt and get a taste of Arnold Schönberg's opera during a rehearsal.

Die Erwartung auf »Erwartung« steigt. Unsere Förderer und Unterstützer, die Theaterfreunde, treffen GMD Domonkos Héja und Sopranistin Sally du Randt und bekommen bei einem Probenbesuch einen Vorgeschmack auf die Oper von Arnold Schönberg.
