What is virtuosity, in dance? Is it beauty, or strength?

A society that is reviewing categories and preconceptions needs art to provide emblematic answers.

Angelin Preljocaj and Rachid Ouramdane seek an answer with a piece for performers over 60.

About the Project

"What is the real age of a body?" (Angelin Preljocaj).

"There is no dance without a body and there are no bodies that do not age. By questioning the transformation of the dancer's body over the course of his or her life, I wanted to look at the notion of aging through three lenses: the aging of the body, the world of music hall and more specifically tip-tap, and the relationship between couples." (Rachid Ouramdane)

In a new creation for the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza/Aterballetto, the two renowned choreographers, Angelin Preljocaj and Rachid Ouramdane, address the theme of the body transforming with age. The choreographers were asked to react to this fascinating subject, which profoundly questions the criteria of beauty and virtuosity.

The artistic core of a wide-ranging project tackles this theme with performers (dancers and non-dancers) over 60.

We intend to address the issue of the transformation of the body, its perception as a vehicle of aesthetics, and the need to strengthen the awareness of the centrality of cultural welfare in the society of the future. Dance, more than any other dimension, is familiar with problems that occur around the age of forty, when most artists interrupt their careers.

When asked to create beyond certain boundaries, both choreographers responded with their own generosity, curiosity, and intellectual energy. Unlike other important experiences, which have aimed to prolong the careers of groups of dancers, this project tries to investigate how age can influence and be seen on stage.

Preljocaj addresses it with a new work for seven performers, which is counterbalanced by Ouramdane's research, aimed at creating a duo, which will complete the evening.

The evening, produced by FND/Aterballetto, supported by Fondazione Ravasi Garzanti, in co-production with the Ballet Preljocaj, Chaillot - Théâtre national de la Danse, ERT-Emilia Romagna Teatro and Fondazione I Teatri di Reggio Emilia will debut on 15 February 2023 in Paris.

By supporting our project, you will contribute to a broader discussion about active aging and how the performing arts and dance can maintain an active mind and body, not by demonizing the passage of time but rather by highlighting its new possibilities and abilities.

Over Dance (working title) is a project that aims to undertake a process of bringing together subjects from the world of artistic production, scientific institutions, and welfare operators to build a path starting with this artistic production. In fact, the show will be the gravitational center of a broader project involving the partners' territories: workshops dedicated to intergenerational dialogue and research paths on the movement for over-age users will be promoted, as well as round tables and in-depth conferences in which research institutions, healthcare entities, and government decision-makers will be involved.

Furthermore, Fondazione Nazionale della Danza/Aterballetto will make available a Ph.D. candidate researcher to follow the creation, rehearsal process, and collateral events who will analyze, collect data, and interview the people involved.

By reaching 7.000€ we will be able to create a film production as a public testimony of the research as well as the making of the entire production.

A second step will be reaching 10.000€ which will allow us to publish hard copies and online versions of the final university research based on the overall project between dance and aging.

The video will be publicly available through our channels and the research will be available to purchase on our website with a 50% discount for all our donors.

Who are we?

Over Dance (working title) will feature an international team, including the two renowned choreographers, Angelin Preljocaj and Rachid Ourandame, who will both complete their artistic collaborations with trusted people and well-known names in the industry.

The Fondazione Nazionale della Danza/Aterballetto: FND/Aterballetto is the National Choreographic Centre based in Reggio Emilia (Italy), and its main objective is to pursue a cultural policy connected with its historical artistic mission. The National Choreographic Centre is the leading institution for the project.

Co-Produced by:

Ballet Preljocaj: Since founding his company, Angelin Preljocaj has created 55 choreographic works, ranging from solos to larger formations. The Ballet performs about 100 dates per year on tour, in France and abroad. Beyond the repertory performances, the Ballet Preljocaj has been multiplying its local actions in Aix-en-Provence and neighboring communities, in order to share its passion for dance with a broader public. For the project, Ballet Preljocaj will provide support, host rehearsals, and provide part of the artistic team.

Chaillot - Théâtre national de la Danse: Chaillot welcomes artists and audiences in a venue shaped by its architectural, historical, and artistic dimensions, a theater that serves the wide diversity of creators and audiences. In 2000, Chaillot expanded its programming to include choreographic art and became, in 2008, the first National Theater “leading a project predominantly built around and from dance.” For the project, Chaillot will support and host the production premiere evening and other dates.

ERT-Emilia Romagna Teatro: With almost 200 shows, ERT's productions have been performed in the most prestigious theatres and festivals in Italy and worldwide. Its head office is in Modena, but ERT also works in the cities of Bologna, Cesena, Vignola and Castelfranco Emilia where it manages seven theatres. For the project, ERT will support and provide the Teatro Storchi in Modena and Teatro Arena del Sole in Bologna for the Italian dates.

Fondazione I Teatri di Reggio Emilia: The activities of I Teatri di Reggio Emilia involve all areas of live performance, with six seasons - opera, concerts, dance, prose, musical-operetta, and children's theater - and two festivals. This is a unique theater system in Italy: three theaters gathered around a square in the heart of the city, each strongly characterized both architecturally and by the type of programming. For the project, I Teatri will support the creation and diffusion of the production in the upcoming seasons.

Centro Servizi Culturali S. Chiara: The S. Chiara Cultural Services Centre is an economic and instrumental public body of the Autonomous Province of Trento. Its primary tasks include: planning and promoting the cultural offer in the field of entertainment, using the network of theatre venues it manages, as well as other structures of provincial relevance; organising initiatives, including theatre, music, film and audio-visual production; carrying out events and initiatives promoted by public and private subjects, including cultural initiatives of provincial relevance requested by the Province.

Fondazione Ravasi Garzanti: The Fondazione Ravasi Garzanti promotes, participates in, and supports initiatives aimed at improving the knowledge and awareness of the entire community on the issues of aging, creating the conditions to inspire, in the face of the phenomenon of longevity and conscious behaviors. For the project, the Fondazione will be the scientific partner who will be in charge of the broader study research.
