ROOTS (working title)

Ukraine
Taras Shevchenko National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine

“ROOTS” (working title)

ROOTS (working title) is one of the first projects of the National Opera of Ukraine, that will touch upon some of the most pressing problems of the contemporary society: climate change, people's interaction with nature and each other, equality and humanity, the universal subject of journeys.

Presentation

Today, we live in a time of great disruption for the world and in a period of global crisis. Therefore, it is even more essential to create an artwork that will say something important in this very situation. A work that will reflect our world today, people's feelings and actions, our relationship and interaction with what surrounds us, and also raise one of the most defining issues of our time – climate change.

Therefore, we would very much like to present the project ROOTS (working title).

“This art work is a topical social project that raises the most important world issues today – equality, journeys and transitions, borders and invisible walls that appeared between people, global crisis and climate change - all this through the prism of postmodern art and dance. This is a way of saying something important and a way of coping with the world at this moment in a language that is understandable for everyone, no matter what nationality, gender or confession you are, what country you live in or what you do. Showing the diversity of art and how the fragile and vulnerable art form still can be so powerful, strong and important.”
 - Ksenia Zvereva, Choreographer.

The title ROOTS has a symbolic meaning. It is a certain specific image and object, it's something that is essential for the life on our planet. However, the word ”roots” also carries a figurative meaning – it is something that goes back into the depths of time and relates directly to people and the human race. A symbol that in this work connects humans with each other as well as with the nature and the world around us.

Another source of inspiration for this work is the music by H.M. Górecki (1933-2010) and J.S. Bach (1685-1750). We'll see a fusion of different time epochs and how these music pieces can be interpreted today, still remaining so modern and powerful.

The scenography and costumes for this project will be made from recycled materials as an effort to take actions in the question of climate change.

Artistic Team

Our creative team includes young and talented specialists from different countries, united by a modern and progressive vision of the theatrical art, introducing into it and touching upon important social themes and issues in their creations.

Our goal is to develop and popularize the dance art in Ukraine, presenting the latest modern performances at the stage of the theatre and involving them into the repertoire. This, with their novelty, creativity and relevance, will actively attract the attention of spectators of all ages.

Collaboration with foreign artistic members will give us the opportunity to bring new experience and vision into the creative process of the theater, which will allow us to reveal its potential much more as well as the ability to further diversify ourselves at the international level.
