Wiener Staatsoper

Opernring 2,
1010 Vienna, Austria

The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) is one of the most important opera houses in the world. Each season, it presents more than 350 performances, including opera, ballet, and concerts. The venue is famous for its excellent acoustics and long artistic tradition. It has its own orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic (in its opera formation), and works closely with the Vienna State Ballet.

The opera house opened in 1869 with a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Originally named the Vienna Court Opera (Wiener Hofoper), it became the Staatsoper after the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During World War II, the building was heavily damaged, but was later rebuilt. It reopened in 1955 with Beethoven’s Fidelio.

Today, the Renaissance Revival building on the Ringstraße has 1,709 seats. It offers a wide range of performances, from Baroque to modern works. The Vienna State Opera is led by a music director and features top international singers and conductors. The Vienna State Opera Ballet also performs regularly, helping to maintain the institution’s reputation as a leading center for opera and dance.
