"Omar Rajeh, Founder, Artistic Director"

Omar Rajeh is a choreographer, dancer, founder and artistic director of Maqamat. Initially based in Lebanon since 2002, he moved and set up his company in Lyon in 2020 and he continues to create and develop his projects in Lebanon, France and internationally. He was distinguished by the French Ministry of Culture ‘for his contribution and engagement in the service of Culture’ with the title of ‘Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters). He created more than twenty choreographic creations that were widely presented in major international festivals around the World. His work is always carried with strong compositions and an invested and vigorous physical presence. Omar Rajeh is the founder of the BIPOD- Beirut International Platform of Dance, co-founder of Masahat network, the founder of Takween, an intensive training program, and Moultaqa Leymoun, a platform that showcases and develops the work of artists and choreographers from the Arab countries. In 2017, he designed and established Citerne Beirut, a choreographic and cultural center in Lebanon which, following its forced dismantling in 2019, gave birth in France to in 2020.

The company has just closed the 20th anniversary edition of its international dance festival , BIPOD, that took place in Beirut. In addition to intensively touring the two main productions of Omar Rajeh, 'Beytna' and 'Dance is not for Us' , the focus at the moment, with the creative teams and partners, is on the new creation DANCE PEOPLE that will premiere in the summer of 2025.

Renowned for its profound engagement and its unique and innovative artistic creations and proposals, Maqamat fosters international exchange and advocates for an urgent and politically engaged dance vision. Donations can ensure the progress of its projects, and sustain an approach of richness and diversity across the Euro-Mediterranean cultural landscape.

Touring worldwide since its premiere at Tanzquartier Wien in 2016, Beytna is a significant addition to Maqamat & Omar Rajeh's repertoire. Four choreographers and four musicians from Lebanon, Japan, Palestine, Belgium, and Togo, coming from different artistic and cultural backgrounds, meet on stage to create and present a feast of food to the audience. They converse, drink, laugh, dance, eat together, and raise their glasses to life. A tribute to diversity, hospitality, and being together.
