Platform memberThe Royal Opera House La Monnaie is Belgium’s federal opera house. It is a cultural meeting point in the centre of Brussels and has for more than 300 years gathered people together for opera and dance performances, recitals and concerts. With its bold and internationally acclaimed productions, La Monnaie has taken its place among the major European opera houses and continues to achieve its artistic ambitions by attracting renowned performing artists, giving opportunities to talented young performers and above all by combining the traditional skills of its studios and workshops with a spirit of innovation. Not just art for art’s sake, but because the experience of art succeeds in emancipating people in a variety of ways, making them stronger and reinforcing social ties. Today, it is renowned for its boldness, respect for the environment and openness to all. In 2024, it was named “Best Opera House of the Year” by the OPER! Awards.
La Monnaie is committed to a Green Opera initiative. Following a clear sustainability timeline, it earned its first star from the Ecodynamic Enterprise label in 2003, followed by a second in 2005. After conducting energy consumption analyses, the opera house underwent renovation works between 2014 and 2019, while also developing early reflections on eco-design in its productions. These renovations focused on improving building energy efficiency, and rehearsal sets began reusing elements from the opera’s existing stock. Since 2020, the Green Opera project has launched several initiatives. In early 2022, a fast-rolling shutter was installed at the loading docks to isolate the area from the street and reduce heat loss from the workshops. In May 2022, the public engagement team released a podcast series titled "EC(H)O," exploring the opera house’s social and environmental commitments. In the same year, La Monnaie was nominated in the "Sustainability" category at the International Opera Awards. In 2023, La Monnaie joined the Green Deal Logistics to cut transport pollution in Brussels. By 2025, it aims to store its sets closer to the opera house.
