Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc Rijeka

Verdijeva ul. bb,
51000 Rijeka, Croatia

Inaugurated on 3 October 1885 as the 'Teatro Comunale', the theatre was later renamed in 1945 in honour of the composer Ivan Zajc. The Viennese architects Fellner & Helmer designed this neo-Renaissance masterpiece, with its façade adorned with statues of Apollo and the Muses dominating the city centre.

With 1,200 seats in an Italian-style auditorium, it hosts lyrical, dramatic, and choreographic performances across its four core ensembles: Croatian Drama, Italian Drama, Ballet, and Opera (supported by the Rijeka Symphony Orchestra). The theatre’s 315 employees including artistic, technical, and administrative staff ensure efficient operations, backed by in-house workshops for costumes, sets, and a dedicated Audience Development division.

Current productions range from classics like 'La Traviata' and 'Swan Lake' to contemporary works like the Croatian 'Orfeo ed Euridice' (2022). Its philharmonic orchestra, founded in 1873, remains one of the oldest in the Balkans.
