Point dOrgue

Presentation

A new opera
Point d’orgue is a new opera commissioned by the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées to the French composer Thierry Escaich and writer & stage director Olivier Py. They put their heads together to imagine a sequel to one of the most famous French operas of the 20th century, La Voix Humaine by Poulenc. What happens after that phone call? Point d’orgue tells the story of Him, Her, and “the other one.”

The backstory
Ever since Pascal Dusapin’s opera Passion was staged at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in 2010, we have aimed to follow in the footsteps of our famous predecessors who made our theatre a legend, from the creation of The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky to Varese’s Deserts.

20th century meets 21st
Thierry Escaich takes over from Francis Poulenc, with whom he shares the love of sacred art references and grand orchestration skills.

In the wake of Cocteau’s words, the story and libretto by Olivier Py, approved by the Cocteau foundation to be given as a counterpoint to La Voix Humaine, take the dialogue between two human beings on a new level of modern writing.

In the end, the two operas will become a unique creative work and will be staged during the same evening. They will be both staged by Olivier Py and conducted by Jérémie Rhorer, with Patricia Petibon, Jean-Sébastien Bou, and Cyrille Dubois in the main parts.
