The Barber

Presentation

The Barber is a short version of Rossini’s Barber of Seville aimed at children and young people. The project has been created for young audience to have the chance to discover one of the most important pieces of the opera repertoire. With the help of a music arranger, Adrien Perruchon, a young French conductor, reduced the opera to one hour. The libretto, rewritten by Gilles Rico, is in French in order for children to understand the plot. Only 5 characters remain in that adaptation. Young singers were auditioned nationwide for these 5 leading roles. Concerning the orchestra, it could either be composed of 12 musicians playing on stage or it could remain in the pit. In order to find a stage director, a call for projects was issued. It was specified that the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées wanted to find someone who had never staged an opera before in order to bring a new cultural dimension. The set had to be light, clever and easy to handle in order for it to be put together in 2 or 3 hours. The Théâtre des Champs-Elysées would like to launch this project on a European level to develop coproductions with other countries in a different way. Each partner would produce his own version of the Barber and involve young artists in this project. The musical score would then become the common theme between all the European opera houses. All the productions would be presented during an International Barber Festival organised by the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in order to strengthen the close links between the European opera houses and to build bridges between young artists with different cultural backgrounds. The public would then have the chance to discover this worldwide known opera in a different cultural light, in a different language, with another cultural background.
