SYNE Performance : 20minutes
The first chapter of SYNE, created in 2025, was conceived to explore our relationship with artificial intelligence by bringing together two forces : opera voice, one of the highest achievements of the human voice, and AI, one of the most advanced technologies ever created. SYNE 2026 is the culmination of this artistic research.
At the centre of the performance, the opera singer's digital clone appears as a monumental holographic head. Reproducing her face, voice and expressions, it performs famous operatic arias before gradually inviting the human singer into a live duet. Developed with Adrenaline Studio for the holographic staging, and with visual integration currently in discussion with Luke Halls Studio, the performance brings a human voice and its AI counterpart together on stage, accompanied only by an orchestra. What begins as a dialogue gradually becomes a shared musical performance, where both voices coexist in real time.
What remains uniquely human when AI can reproduce ourselves, our voice without imperfections ? SYNE invites audiences to experience this transformation rather than simply observe it, telling what to think or debating the future of AI. Who do we connect with ?
Digital "performer" form appear technically superior, audiences may gravitate towards the human singer. Her breath, vulnerability, physical effort create imperfections and define her, an emotional presence that cannot be optimised or engineered.
The paradox lies here. At first glance, opera and AI, this human and this machine, seem to belong to opposite worlds. Yet they are driven by the same ambition: the pursuit of excellence, seeking the progress. One seeks to transcend human limitations through technology, the other suggests that our limitations are precisely what make us human.
When AI is still largely shaped by people sharing similar gender, cultures, generations (AI's dominant narratives) SYNE through opera wants to bring other voices.
