Inspiration, Artistic Vision, and Trajectory
Opera Prima - Sant Andreu District - La rosa dels set pètals (The Seven-Petaled Rose) is the second large-scale community and educational opera produced under the Gran Teatre del Liceu’s landmark OPERA PRIMA program. Embedded within the theater’s 2023–2026 Strategic Plan through its specialized social area, LiceuApropa, this visionary initiative commissions a major mainstage opera every four years. By fully integrating citizen co-creation into the theater’s official season, the program champions cultural democracy, social transformation, and systemic equity, dismantling the historical distance between a century-old cultural institution and diverse citizens who have historically been excluded from opera.
History and Context
The program launched with the critically acclaimed La gata perduda (2022/2023), co-created with the diverse Raval neighborhood. It became an international benchmark for European community arts, winning Spain's prestigious 2023 Max Award for Best Musical Show and the Josep Anselm Clavé Awards for social choir integration, alongside validation from the European Union in its "40 Stories, 40 Years" document.
This second edition roots itself in the Sant Andreu District—a territory with a deep-seated industrial, working-class, and civic identity comprising seven distinct neighborhoods: El Congrés i els Indians, Navas, La Sagrera, Sant Andreu de Palomar, La Trinitat Vella, Baró de Viver, and El Bon Pastor. By weaving together local memory and high-art operatic standards, the project transforms everyday neighborhood heritage into an empowering artistic statement. The final production will premiere on the Liceu mainstage from June 4 to 6, 2027.
