Theater Magdeburg not only offers different performances for young audiences – from concerts with programs adapted for toddlers to workshops on modern music for youngsters or the yearly Christmas fairy tale production, but we also try to reach new audiences by bringing our performances to unusual venues such as the local zoo or the public library. The dramaturgy department collaborates with local institutions to present our productions within the context of lecture series or university events.
Innovation & Creativity
The education department of Theater Magdeburg runs different projects to encourage creativity activities with and by young audiences including their own productions. Workshops in schools complete the educational work. In addition, our yearly participative children’s opera directly involves schoolchildren in the performance of an opera. Theater Magdeburg regularly commissions new operas in order to renew the repertory and foster emerging artists and innovation in opera.
Each year, the Friends of Theater Magdeburg award promotion prizes to three emerging artists from the ensemble. Theater Magdeburg regularly offers residencies and masterclasses for young singers who have shown promising performances during competitions. Some participate in our yearly children’s opera. Both in opera and in drama, we encourage our young assistants to develop their future career by entrusting them with their own productions (including director, set and costumes).
Besides the yearly promotion prize for three members of the ballet, drama and music ensemble, the Friends of Theater Magdeburg continually support our work financially. Moreover, they help opening Theater Magdeburg’s work up to new audiences: The "Theaterpaten", a sponsorship project, enables deprived children attending performances at Theater Magdeburg. The discussion series "ThemaTisch" accompanies productions and allows insights into the daily work of Theater Magdeburg.
