Founded in 1925 the Stara Zagora State Opera is one of Bulgaria's oldest opera houses. It was the first opera house outside Sofia and the first in the country to have a building designed specifically for opera. The present building opened in 1971 is the largest opera house in the Balkans. After a fire in 1991 it was restored and reopened in 2010. The opera house offers a wide range of performances including opera, ballet, musicals and concerts. It also hosts events in unique venues, such as the ancient Roman forum Augusta Traiana.

FOBA - The Festival of the Opera and Ballet Arts in Stara Zagora - is Bulgaria’s first specialized forum dedicated to opera and ballet, established in 1967. Over the decades, it has presented a rich mix of national and international performances, including rarely staged works. Held annually, the festival is a key cultural event, drawing renowned artists and ensembles from across Europe. It continues to celebrate the classical arts while introducing diverse and lesser-known repertoire to Bulgarian audiences.
