FEDORA Prizes, Industry News

We are saddened to hear that Sir Graham Vick, Artistic Director of Birmingham Opera Company, has passed away after complications arising from Covid-19.

He founded the Birmingham Opera Company in 1987 and as director, he brought opera to lesser-reached audiences through boundary breaking productions in unconventional venues and immersive outreach programs. In 2020, Birmingham Opera’s education programme “Going for Gold”, presented in conjunction with their production of Wagner’s Das Rheingold, became the winner of the second edition of the FEDORA Education Prize. In June, while running online rehearsals for the project he had been admitted to hospital after testing positive to the virus. The humanity and dedication he channelled through his works will endure and continue to shape our community of opera.

Our heartfelt condolences and thoughts go out to his family and colleagues.
