Laika the Spacedog: An Interactive Opera for Young Audiences

Theater Magdeburg invited young audiences to become part of the performance with Laika the Spacedog, an interactive children’s opera combining music, history and participation while transforming children from spectators into active contributors to the story.

Composed by Russell Hepplewhite with a libretto by Tim Yealland, Laika the Spacedog takes audiences back to the Space Race of the 1950s. Against the backdrop of the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik 1, the opera follows the journey of Laika, the stray dog who became the first animal to orbit the Earth.

Directed by Annemiek van Elst, the production approaches this historical story through an interactive format specifically designed for children aged six and above.

Participation begins well before the audience enters the theatre. In the weeks leading up to the performance, theatre educators introduce children to their interactive roles through workshops included with their tickets. When performance day arrives, the young participants are ready to become part of the action themselves.

This participatory approach creates a different relationship between performers and young audiences, offering children a direct encounter with opera while encouraging curiosity, imagination and active engagement with the story.

Theater Magdeburg premiered the production on 31 May 2026, with the Magdeburgische Philharmonie and a cast including Irene Cabezuelo, David Howes, Oliver Huttel, Weronika Rabek and puppeteer Lutz Großmann.
