About the project

Ring of Our Time is an epic, collaborative opera that intertwines the mythologies of five ancient civilizations — from the Euphrates region, Mexico, Nigeria, Indonesia, and Northern Europe — to reflect on the global consequences of resource exploitation. The narrative follows the goddesses and gods of the world as they attempt to restore the sacred thread connecting humans, animals, and nature, broken during colonial times. Drawing on four years of research, World Opera Lab collaborated with musicians, activists, policy makers, scientists, and artists worldwide, integrating diverse rituals, music, and stories into a shared artistic experience. This opera creates a space where global ecological and social challenges are explored through myth, ritual, and cross-cultural dialogue.

About the artists

The opera brings together forty international artists from Nigeria, Iraq, Indonesia, Mexico, and Northern Europe, each contributing music, ritual, and performance from their cultural traditions. Key participants include Ine Aya’ (voice, Kalimantan rainforest), Mugaa To’ (river rituals, Pontianak), Sujuy Ja’ (Maya sacred water ceremonies, Yucatan), and Brides of the Rain (Iraq). Their diverse practices converge in Ring of Our Time, blending ancient mythologies with contemporary ecological concerns.
