Philip Venables Unveils "The Alonetimes": A Bold New Opera World Premiere on 16 April

FEDORA is proud to spotlight Philip Venables, winner of the FEDORA – Generali Prize for Opera 2019 for Denis & Katya, as he returns to the stage with the world premiere of The Alonetimes on 16 April 2026 at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris.
Venables, celebrated for his strikingly original voice in opera, music theatre, and multimedia, continues to explore storytelling that challenges the boundaries of contemporary performance. His previous works, including 4.48 Psychosis, Denis & Katya, The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions, and We Are The Lucky Ones, have been performed worldwide, earning major awards and critical acclaim. The New Yorker calls him “an arrestingly original musical personality”, and The Guardian describes him as “one of the finest composers around”.
In The Alonetimes, Philip Venables joins forces with Jennifer Walshe for the first time, in a groundbreaking co-composition that brings their distinct musical voices into dialogue. Initiated by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain and the Festival Musica, the work was specially commissioned for the Fondation Cartier’s new spaces. The piece follows six voices navigating fragmented, intimate moments, first encounters, missed appointments, breakups, and awkward memories, reflecting the tension between digital closeness and emotional distance. Venables’ theatrical storytelling merges with Walshe’s experimental approach, creating an inventive, immersive experience where the two composers’ styles constantly challenge and reshape each other.
