Joint Technical Production and Techset Forum Meeting in Mainz - Opera Europa

Last month, Opera Europa’s TechSet and Technical & Production Forum meeting was held at the Staatstheater Mainz, Germany. The conference brought together opera professionals, experts and guests.
Wednesday 3 May 2023
The conference was opened with a welcome address by Rolf Hauser, Head of the Production workshop at FEDORA Platform Member Dutch National Opera & Ballet, Amsterdam, and host Bertil Brakemeier, Head of the Technical Department at Staatstheater Mainz.
Hannu Järvensivu, Assisting head of the set workshop and XR Stage Project Manager at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, moderated a session entitled “Modernising the production process” during which he presented the project XR Stage, recipient of the FEDORA Next Stage Grants.
Later on, Simon Cook, Director of ReSet Scenery, held a session on “Circular marketplace for sets”. In parallel to this session, a strategy discussion was held between technical and production directors.
In the afternoon, three sessions were held:
Sanne Brodersen, Head of Production at Det Kongelige Teater in Copenhagen, together with Bob Brandsen, Technical Director at the Dutch National Opera & Ballet, moderated a session entitled “Developing and working with sustainability rules”.
Frédéric Lyonnet, Deputy Technical Director at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Platform Member of FEDORA in France, and Lukas Vaupel, Project Coordinator at Wuppertaler Bühnen, shared the stage to talk about “Standardisation of set elements”.
Andrea Miglio, Technical Director at Fondazione Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Italy, and Eugenio Giorgetta, Technical Director at Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Italy held a session entitled “Sharing technical information internationally on Operabook”.
In the evening, guests attended a performance of Puccini’s Le Villi and Leoncavallo’s Paggliaci, conducted by Daniel Montané and directed by Verena Stoiber.

On Thursday, Tapio Säkkinen, Head of Set Workshop and Environmental Head at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, together with Rasmus Clausen, Technical Director at Det Kongelige Teater, and Rolf Hauser moderated a session entitled “Exchanging staff: Best practices”.
Later on, Yonatan Kanner, Chief of Operations and Technical Production at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, held a discussion on “Interesting, innovative, sustainable experiences of the year”.
Rutger Flierman, Sound-video engineer at Het Muziektheater in Amsterdam, moderated a session entitled “Faster and more versatile conductor monitoring system”.
Emma Wilson, Director of Technical, Production & Costume at the Royal Opera House in London, held the final session on “Challenging, surprising or failure experiences of the year”.
