Towards a sustainable future

On 26 June 2023 the Artistic Director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Matthias Schulz, presented, during the General Assembly of the Freunde und Förderer der Staatsoper Unter den Linden (Friends & Supporters of the State Opera Unter den Linden), the latest developments regarding a (more) sustainable opera house. In 2022, a new event was established by the Staatsoper Unter den Linden with the financial support of the Friends & Supporters: Sustainable Listening

Forests are burning, glaciers are melting, oceans are being poisoned and the 1.5 degree target seems unattainable. Helping to shape the change to a sustainable society is not only a concern for business and research, but also for the cultural sector. With the music and discourse format »Sustainable Listening«, which is planned for several seasons, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden focuses on this social challenge: a walk-in climate capsule becomes a place for impulses, exchange and participation with climate experts, activists and visionaries on various topics of sustainability. The core of the series is the concert performance: music played by musicians from the Staatskapelle Berlin, who are involved in the Orchestra of Change, merges with live electronic sounds by the Teichmann brothers and key-note lectures to create an installative space experience. DJ and drinks invite you to exchange ideas, network and linger.

»Sustainable Listening« is now an integral part of the programme of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Furthermore, there are musicians of the Staatskapelle performing in the Orchestra of Change, which is a German wide ensemble of musicians who are committed to climate protection and sustainability in music and support a reforestation project in Madagascar. Matthias Schulz explained to the audience that in the near future, the Staatsoper intends to place solar panels on the roofs of the rehearsal centre, which is not possible on the roof of the opera house because of monument protection regulations.

The event was enriched with music by two members of the Orchestra Academy of the Staatskapelle Berlin, Mălina Ciobanu and Assif Binness.
