FEDORA Ambassador Series: In Conversation with Caroline Thiébot, Founder of SYMPAN
Created by artist Caroline Thiébot, SYMPAN is a singular artistic universe where art, symbolism and craftsmanship converge.
Each SYMPAN is a unique sculptural work, conceived as a resonance between a person, a moment or an institution and the celestial movements that surround it.
Crafted with precious materials and guided by sacred geometry, these pieces celebrate life paths, artistic journeys and meaningful milestones.
Caroline Thiébot shared how SYMPAN grew out of her lifelong fascination with the links between the cosmos, matter, and memory. Her background spans astronomy, celestial geometry, mineralogy, sacred architecture, and jewelry-making, disciplines that together shaped a practice focused on translating meaningful moments into sculptural form.
Each SYMPAN begins with the study of a precise celestial configuration: the night sky at the appointment of an étoile, the moment of a world premiere, or the date of a historic performance. This invisible alignment becomes a geometric foundation that she materialises in gold, gemstones, and refined craftsmanship.
Her conviction is rooted in a universal perspective:
“Sacred geometry, like celestial geometry, is the universal language. It's the language of the cosmos and of harmony… Each of us is a fragment of the universe, a fragment with its own shape, its own brilliance, and its unique place within the greater whole.”
In the interview, Caroline Thiébot described recent works dedicated to emblematic moments in dance and opera. These include SYMPAN pieces marking a dancer’s appointment as an étoile or honouring legendary performances such as the 1964 Swan Lake by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn.
For her, these creations preserve more than a date, they embody the dedication, artistry, and emotional resonance that define an artist’s journey.
Looking ahead, Caroline Thiébot expressed that what she finds most inspiring in her collaboration with FEDORA is the chance to highlight the defining moments of the FEDORA Prizes, crafting made-to-measure pieces that reflect the artistic legacy of opera and dance. For her, engaging with the artists and visionary figures behind these achievements adds a unique and valuable dimension to her work.
Caroline Thiébot also reflected on the broader ecosystem that sustains artistic creation. She emphasised how philanthropy and cultural alliances are vital pillars that allow artists and institutions to innovate, to push boundaries, and to bring ambitious projects to life. For her, support from patrons and artistic communities is not simply financial, it is a gesture of trust that empowers creation, preserves heritage, and fuels artistic courage.
Her words echo FEDORA’s mission:
“Philanthropy allows artists to take risks, to dare and to create. Without philanthropy, many masterpieces would never have come into being. FEDORA does more than support, it gives rise to new and daring works. It nurtures the next generation and connects creativity on an international scale.”
She also emphasized her vision of an artistic ecosystem in which innovation sparks bold new creations while tradition and craftsmanship continue to flourish. For her, philanthropy is the bridge that makes this coexistence possible, strengthening the continuum between heritage and new voices, and ensuring that future generations can produce work that endures, resonates, and inspires.
