The Greek National Opera (GNO) was founded in 1940, following 150 years of a flourishing opera tradition on the Ionian Islands and 50 years of activity (1888-1938) by the Hellenic Melodrama, a versatile opera company. From the outset, the GNO repertory comprised operas, operettas and ballets. Throughout time, some of the most distinguished Greek artists have been at the helm of the GNO, by introducing new works and promoting the company internationally. Since 1994, the GNO has been a private, state-funded organization. In March 2017, the GNO relocated to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). The new premises are among the most modern opera houses worldwide. The high aesthetics, state-of-the-art acoustics, as well as the installations of the Stavros Niarchos Hall, (1400 seats) bolster a high-caliber artistic program. Furthermore, the Alternative Stage (400 seats) is a hub of creativity in the field of education, community and contemporary creation.
