Opéra de Lille and co-producers Opéra Orchestre national de Montpellier, Opéra national de Lorraine (Nancy), Opera Ballet Vlaanderen (Antwerp), Le Balcon and IRCAM present a new multimedia chamber opera, Like flesh. A subversion of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Like flesh is a dark contemporary myth informed by queer politics and environmental sciences. It offers an urgent warning against our destructive relationships with each other and our world.

Trapped in an unhappy marriage, a woman mourns the devastation of the forest around her. An unexpected affair instigates an explosive metamorphosis, and she finds perfect release as a tree. But the world is a dangerous place for trees, and deep in the forest a student and a forester lay claim to a body of wood and leaf, one for money and one for love.

Written in fragmented scenes, the narrative, led by three protagonists, is interrupted by poetic monologues from a vocal ensemble representing the Forest, who guide us from the last ice age to the 6th Great Extinction, creating a vivid context for the soloists to inhabit. The music is scored for an amplified chamber ensemble and a distributed array of 64 speakers spread throughout the hall which gradually shift the audience’s perception of the space, reflecting the libretto’s themes of transformation.

Our international creative team includes American-Israeli composer Sivan Eldar; British librettist Cordelia Lynn; Italian director Silvia Costa and her team joined on this occasion by the AI visual artist Francesco D’Abbraccio; IRCAM Computer Music Designer Augustin Muller and French conductor Maxime Pascal, leading his innovative ensemble Le Balcon.

The World Premiere of Like flesh will be at Lille on 21st January 2022, with Dutch Contralto Helena Rasker, English bass-baritone William Dazeley and Anglo-Belgian soprano Juliette Allen. It is Cordelia and Sivan’s first full-length opera, following a successful four-year collaboration on vocal and choral concert works.

L’Opéra de Lille présente Like flesh, un nouvel opéra de Sivan Eldar et Cordelia Lynn mis en scène par Silvia Costa en coproduction avec l’Opéra Orchestre national de Montpellier, l’Opéra national de Lorraine (Nancy), l’Opera Ballet Vlaanderen (Anvers), Le Balcon et l’IRCAM (Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique/musique).

Inspiré des Métamorphoses d’Ovide, Like flesh s’appuie sur la science environnementale moderne pour nous mettre en garde contre nos relations toxiques avec les autres et avec le monde.

Prisonnière d’un mariage malheureux, une femme se lamente de la forêt dévastée autour d’elle. Un événement inattendu déclenche sa métamorphose en arbre, lui offrant une forme de libération. Mais le monde n’est pas sans danger pour les arbres, et au plus profond de la forêt, un forestier et une étudiante revendiquent son corps de bois et de feuilles, l’un pour l’argent, l’autre pour l’amour.

Écrit en une série de courtes scènes, le récit développé par les trois personnages est entrecoupé de monologues poétiques par un chœur incarnant la forêt. Ces histoires nous mènent de la dernière période glaciaire à la sixième extinction de masse, créant un monde métaphorique riche, que peuvent habiter les solistes. La musique est écrite pour un orchestre de chambre amplifié. Dans la salle, un réseau de 64 haut-parleurs modifie progressivement la perception de l'espace par le public, en écho au thème de la transformation développé dans le livret.

Notre équipe artistique internationale réunit la compositrice américano-israélienne Sivan Eldar, la librettiste britannique Cordelia Lynn, la metteure en scène italienne Silvia Costa - qui collabore pour l’occasion avec Francesco D’Abbraccio dont la pratique associe arts visuels et intelligence artificielle -, le réalisateur en informatique musicale à l’IRCAM Augustin Muller et le chef d’orchestre Maxime Pascal, à la tête de l’ensemble Le Balcon.

La création mondiale de Like flesh aura lieu à Lille le 21 janvier 2022, avec la contralto néerlandaise Helena Rasker, le baryton-basse britannique William Dazeley and la soprano anglo-belge Juliette Allen. Il s’agit du premier opéra complet de Cordelia Lynn et Sivan Eldar, après quatre années d’une fructueuse collaboration sur différentes œuvres vocales.

Caroline Sonrier (General and Artistic Director of Opéra de Lille) discovered Sivan Eldar's work following her workshops and concerts at IRCAM and Royaumont. When Sivan spoke to her about her opera project with Cordelia Lynn, she was immediately attracted to the young duo, the originality and contemporary relevance of the themes addressed in the libretto, and the innovative aspect of the composition work that Sivan Eldar wanted to develop in this opera in partnership with IRCAM and computer sound designer Augustin Muller.

On the other hand, Caroline Sonrier wanted to produce a new opera with the Le Balcon Ensemble. Following discussions with Maxime Pascal, its Artistic Director and his team, she decided to produce Like flesh.

She still had to choose a director and her choice fell on Silvia Costa, whose work she has been following and appreciating for several years and with whom she had already had discussed a possible future collaboration. Silvia Costa, who is more and more in demand in Europe, was seduced and inspired by the project, which she and her team (Francesco D'Abbraccio, Alessio Valmori, Andrea Sanson, Laura Dondoli) joined with enthusiasm.

Caroline Sonrier, directrice de l’Opéra de Lille, a découvert le travail de Sivan Eldar à l'occasion de workshops et concerts à l’IRCAM et à la Fondation Royaumont. Quand la compositrice lui a parlé de son projet d’opéra avec Cordelia Lynn, elle a été immédiatement séduite par ce jeune duo, proposant à la fois un livret original et pertinent sur des sujets actuels, et une partition novatrice composée en partenariat avec l’IRCAM et le concepteur sonore Augustin Muller.

Après plusieurs collaborations, Caroline Sonrier souhaitait à nouveau créer un opéra avec l’ensemble Le Balcon, et c’est après en avoir discuté avec son directeur artistique Maxime Pascal qu’elle a décidé de produire Like flesh.

Pour la mise en scène, Caroline Sonrier a fait appel à Silvia Costa, dont elle suit et apprécie le travail depuis quelques années. Silvia Costa, de plus en plus sollicitée en Europe, s’est montrée enthousiaste et inspirée par le projet, qu’elle rejoint avec ses collaborateurs Francesco D’Abbraccio, Alessio Valmori, Andrea Sanson et Laura Dondoli.
