Going for Gold © Birmingham Opera Company i
"It is an extraordinary project, in many aspects. The characteristic of this project is to integrate education and community work within the artistic process. It is completely organically integrated and that is part of the future of opera. In many aspects, Going For Gold is an avant-garde project about how to integrate cultural rights in the process of making opera."
Bernard Foccroulle, Chair of the FEDORA Education Prize Jury
Inspiring 10,000 local people with 100 free events and supporting 50 diverse emerging artists with unparalleled professional development opportunities in Europe’s youngest, most diverse city. It culminates in a disused factory, with volunteer performers alongside a stellar international cast and the full CBSO, in a ground-breaking production of Wagner’s RhineGold (Das Rheingold) led by Artistic Director Graham Vick and newly appointed Music Director Alpesh Chauhan in August 2021.
"In this year above all, my primary concern is the well-being of those talented artists now embarking on careers against such insuperable odds. It is not just opportunities to earn enough to live, but the chance to practise and improve the craft in which they have invested so much time and dedication. So, Birmingham Opera Company's intensive coaching by top mentors and challenging rehearsal process offers a lifeline, which I know will be eagerly grasped by those singers selected. I for one can hardly wait to experience the result next Summer."
