Young Associates – production on the Sadler’s Wells main stage

United Kingdom
Sadler's Wells Theatre

Young Associates Main Stage Production

Presentation

Sadler’s Wells is a world-leading creative organisation, dedicated to presenting, producing and touring dance in all its forms. We present around 900 performances per year worldwide to audiences of nearly 700,000 and since 2005 have brought over 150 new works to the stage.

Sadler’s Wells is a place where artists come together to create dance. We believe that the future of dance lies in nurturing talented artists at every stage of their career. Our goal is to support artists according to their needs, as they develop their practice and create new work.

We identified a gap in training for young artists who have potential to become choreographers. To address this gap, we created a new professional development programme for young people aged 18-24, the Young Associates. This initiative nurtures the next generation of dance-makers and provides the support to develop their own creative voice and choreographic practice.

We selected the first cohort of four Young Associates in 2017: Wilhelmina Ojanen (b.1995, Finland), Ruby Portus (b.1996, UK), Anthony Matsena (b.1994, Zimbabwe) and Christopher Thomas (b.1996, UK). In October 2018, they presented new pieces in the Lillian Baylis Studio (capacity 180). As part of the two-year programme, the Young Associates will present a full evening of new work on the Sadler’s Wells stage on 17 July 2019.

The four young artists have support from professional artists throughout the programme, including choreographers Tim Casson and Hetain Patel. The whole creative team for this production including dancers, designers and composers, will be aged under 24.

We will focus on reaching younger audiences who may not have been to Sadler’s Wells before. Our outreach scheme, Get into Dance, will offer low priced tickets for this show to those otherwise unable to come to the theatre
